Makkah pact aims at regional stability, vows to defend Saudi Arabia: DG ISPR

ISLAMABAD: Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (DG ISPR) Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry has reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to Saudi Arabia’s security, stating that Islamabad will defend the kingdom under the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement.

In an interview with US broadcaster CNN, the Pakistan Army spokesperson described the agreement as a defensive framework designed to enhance regional security and promote stability amid evolving geopolitical challenges.

Chaudhry said Pakistan’s military cooperation with Saudi Arabia was not a recent development, noting that Pakistani troops had been stationed in the kingdom for decades and had served in various roles and professional capacities.

He explained that the agreement builds on the longstanding defence partnership between the two countries rather than establishing an entirely new military alliance.

Discussing the possible implementation of the pact, the DG ISPR maintained that all actions taken under the agreement would remain defensive and that their consequences would be guided by the same principle.

He said operational commanders would decide the practical details of implementation, including the selection, deployment and utilisation of troops, depending on the requirements and circumstances.

According to Chaudhry, the agreement could contribute to regional stability by strengthening collective defence capabilities against emerging security threats. He noted that the region had experienced changing security dynamics in recent years, making cooperation between partner countries increasingly important.

He further explained that the agreement was based on the principle that an attack on one member would be treated as an attack on all. Such a commitment, he said, could serve as a deterrent against potential aggression and discourage hostile actions.

However, Chaudhry clarified that the agreement was not designed to label any particular country as an adversary or designate another as a friend.

Reiterating Pakistan’s commitment to the kingdom, he said safeguarding Saudi Arabia remained one of the agreement’s central objectives and that Pakistan would honour its defence obligations.

Pakistan Continues Diplomatic Efforts to Ease US-Iran Tensions

Commenting on efforts to resolve the conflict between the United States and Iran, Chaudhry said Pakistan had previously helped facilitate dialogue and would continue working to bridge differences between the two sides.

He emphasised that Pakistan wanted to prevent the conflict from escalating or spreading to other parts of the region, stressing the importance of diplomatic engagement and a peaceful settlement through negotiations.

The military spokesperson also highlighted Pakistan’s role as an honest and impartial mediator in initiatives aimed at securing a ceasefire between Washington and Tehran.

He said Pakistan remained committed to supporting diplomatic efforts that could reduce tensions, encourage dialogue and contribute to lasting regional peace.
