KURRAM: Pakistan security forces responded to what officials described as unprovoked firing by Afghan Taliban forces on Pakistani border posts in Kurram district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, security sources said on Wednesday.
According to the sources, Pakistani troops foiled an attempted infiltration by militants affiliated with Fitna al-Khawarij who were allegedly trying to enter Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from Afghanistan.
The militants reportedly attempted to cross into Pakistan from Afghanistan’s Nangarhar and Paktia provinces. Security forces detected and effectively thwarted the infiltration attempt along the Kurram sector, the sources said.
Following the failure of the attempted infiltration, Afghan Taliban forces allegedly opened fire on Pakistani border positions using heavy weapons, including mortars and other arms.
In response, the Pakistan Army carried out what security sources described as effective and comprehensive retaliatory action. Several Afghan Taliban border posts, mortar positions and defensive locations were targeted with small and heavy weapons, including artillery.
The sources claimed that several Afghan Taliban personnel fled their positions following the Pakistani response. Pakistani security forces remain on high alert and are monitoring developments along the border, they added.
The latest escalation comes a day after Pakistan announced strikes against militant hideouts in the border region adjoining Afghanistan.
The Ministry of Information said Pakistani security forces had targeted three sites linked to the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). According to the ministry, the operation destroyed three militant compounds, including a training facility for suicide bombers, and killed 28 militants. Weapons and ammunition stored at the locations were also destroyed, it said.
The strikes followed intelligence-based operations in Kohat, Hangu and surrounding areas on September 20, during which Pakistani authorities reported killing nine militants.
Pakistani officials have repeatedly raised concerns over militant activity originating from Afghan territory. The government has linked the security threat to attacks in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and other parts of Pakistan.
Officials also identified an Afghan national, Matiullah, as one of the suspected suicide attackers involved in the September 2026 attack on a mosque inside a police compound in Kohat.
The situation along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border remains closely monitored as security forces prepare for any further incidents.
