ISLAMABAD: Police have launched an inquiry into the deaths of 14 newborn babies at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) following a recent fire incident, according to sources.
The investigation has been initiated under Section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), which provides for inquiries into certain deaths. Police are examining the circumstances surrounding the deaths as part of the ongoing proceedings.
Sources said statements from suspended PIMS officials are being recorded during the investigation. Officials nominated in connection with the incident will also have their statements recorded at Karachi Company Police Station.
The inquiry is reportedly being conducted in light of the findings and proceedings of a committee constituted by the Prime Minister to investigate the incident. Further legal proceedings are expected after police complete their inquiry and review the available findings.
The fire at PIMS also brought attention to the efforts of nurse Razia Noreen, who received widespread recognition for her bravery during the emergency.
According to an interview published by The Washington Post, Noreen entered a fire-hit room to rescue newborn babies. She said her primary concern was to save the infants trapped inside and that she did not think about her own safety at the time.
Noreen reportedly managed to rescue a newborn from the burning room within seconds. Her actions have drawn praise from people across Pakistan.
She said she did not enter the room with the intention of becoming a hero, but simply wanted to perform her responsibility as a nurse and mother.
The police investigation will determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths and examine the role of officials in connection with the incident. Authorities are expected to proceed further based on the findings of the inquiry and statements recorded during the investigation.
