AJK: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has claimed a clear majority in the AJK Elections 2026, paving the way for the party to form the next government in the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly.
Prime Minister’s Adviser on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah announced that the party had secured enough seats to establish its government after achieving significant success in the second phase of polling.
Speaking at a joint press conference in Islamabad alongside Federal Minister Engineer Amir Muqam, Rana Sanaullah stated that PML-N won 13 out of 20 seats contested in the second phase of the elections. With these results, the party has secured 23 seats in the 45-member AJK Legislative Assembly, giving it a simple majority required to form the government.
According to Rana Sanaullah, PML-N also dominated the refugee constituencies by winning 10 out of 12 seats. In Muzaffarabad Division, the party secured victory on four seats, while the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) won three constituencies.
Responding to allegations of electoral rigging made by the PPP, Rana Sanaullah maintained that the elections were conducted in a free, fair and transparent manner. He questioned the opposition’s claims, asking how the PPP justified its own victories if the electoral process was allegedly manipulated. He said the people of Azad Kashmir had expressed confidence in the leadership and development agenda of PML-N.
The adviser said senior party leaders, including Nawaz Sharif, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, had congratulated the successful candidates following the election results.
Rana Sanaullah also announced that PML-N would approach the Election Commission to investigate reported incidents in Muzaffarabad city. He alleged that an atmosphere of fear prevented many voters from reaching polling stations, affecting thousands of votes in favour of his party. He further rejected allegations that PML-N workers were involved in violence or firing incidents during polling, describing such accusations as baseless propaganda.
Federal Minister Engineer Amir Muqam praised the peaceful conduct of the elections, crediting the coordinated efforts of the administration, police and security agencies. He said PML-N’s victory reflected the public’s confidence in the leadership of Nawaz Sharif, Shehbaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz, as well as the party’s performance and vision for development.
Muqam added that despite rainfall and logistical challenges, voters actively participated in the democratic process. He urged opposition parties to respect the public mandate and focus on constructive parliamentary politics instead of making allegations. Rana Sanaullah concluded by saying that a strong democratic government would soon be established in AJK and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to supporting the region’s development and the Kashmir cause.
