ISLAMABAD: A delegation of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) will meet National Assembly Opposition Leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai on Tuesday, August 18.
According to sources, the PPP delegation is scheduled to meet Mahmood Khan Achakzai at 11am in the opposition leader’s chamber. The meeting is expected to focus on the prevailing political and parliamentary situation in the country.
Former National Assembly speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, Naveed Qamar, Sherry Rehman and Saleem Mandviwalla will be part of the PPP delegation, sources said.
The meeting comes amid continued political consultations among parliamentary parties over key national and legislative issues. The leaders are expected to exchange views on matters of mutual interest and developments inside Parliament.
Meanwhile, the PPP has decided to raise issues related to the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) elections and the creation of new provinces in Parliament.
Sources said PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari is expected to address the National Assembly and respond to concerns surrounding the AJK elections. He is also likely to highlight the party’s reservations regarding the electoral process and alleged irregularities.
The PPP has previously alleged that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) was involved in rigging during the recently held phase-wise AJK elections. The party has also indicated that it wants the matter to be discussed on the floor of the House.
Bilawal is expected to discuss negotiations with the federal government concerning the political situation arising from the AJK elections. Sources said he may address the National Assembly within the next two days.
The issue of new provinces is also expected to feature prominently in parliamentary proceedings. PPP lawmakers are likely to express their views on the proposal and may stage a protest over the matter.
The PPP has maintained that any decision regarding the creation of new administrative units should be made according to the wishes and consent of the people concerned.
The upcoming meeting between the PPP delegation and Mahmood Khan Achakzai is therefore expected to provide an opportunity for opposition and parliamentary leaders to discuss political developments and coordinate their positions on key national issues.
