KARACHI: The disappearance of manhole covers in Karachi and the accidents caused by open manholes have become a serious public safety issue. To address this challenge, students from the Civil Technology Department at Aligarh Institute have developed an innovative project for the upcoming “Project Exhibition 2026.”
Under the supervision of Civil Technology instructor Engr. Syed Saad, the students have proposed the use of coconut shells and other environmentally friendly materials to manufacture manhole covers instead of conventional iron and steel. The project aims to prevent theft and protect citizens from accidents caused by uncovered manholes.
According to the students, the newly designed covers will not only be lightweight and durable but also significantly more affordable than traditional manhole covers. Since no valuable metals will be used in their production, the chances of theft will be greatly reduced.
Work on the project is progressing rapidly, and further details will be shared soon.
Experts believe that if implemented on a larger scale, this innovative solution could significantly reduce accidents and casualties caused by open manholes in Karachi and across Pakistan.
