KARACHI: The office of Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab was affected after a fire broke out at the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) head office on MA Jinnah Road on Tuesday, according to the KMC spokesperson.
The fire started in the mayor’s office, with officials initially reporting that it had broken out in an adjacent kitchen on the first floor. Fire brigade teams reached the building and brought the blaze under control. Two fire tenders were deployed, and no loss of life was reported.
Mayor Murtaza Wahab later visited the KMC headquarters and inspected the affected area. He said an investigation was underway to determine the cause of the fire.
The mayor said his room was damaged, including its furniture, walls and doors, but the main chamber remained safe. He added that no official records or files were kept in the room and no records were destroyed.
Wahab said the fire appeared to have started from an air conditioner in his office and that the equipment was being examined. He added that the findings of the investigation would be shared with the media.
The incident came a day after a major fire broke out at a factory in Karachi’s Landhi Export Processing Zone, where large quantities of second-hand clothing were stored. Employees were safely evacuated, while firefighters used 18 fire tenders and two snorkels to contain the blaze.
