SINDH:  Mari Energies Limited (MPCL), formerly known as Mari Petroleum, has announced a significant gas discovery at the Soho-1 exploratory well in the Sujawal Block, Sindh. The company reported a gas flow of 30.01 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) at a 64/64” choke, with a wellhead pressure of 1,482.5 psi.

At a narrower choke size of 32/64”, the well yielded 18.84 MMSCFD, with pressure rising to 3,447.8 psi. MPCL, the sole operator of the block with 100% working interest, confirmed that this marks the first successful discovery in the Lower Goru formation within the Sujawal Block—an area previously considered non-productive.

According to a company statement, additional testing is underway to evaluate other geological formations at the site, potentially expanding the scope of the discovery.

This breakthrough in Sindh follows another major development in Pakistan’s energy sector: the discovery of oil and gas reserves at the Spin Wam-1 well in the Waziristan Block, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. That well is currently producing around 20.485 MMSCFD of gas and 117 barrels of light crude oil per day, with a wellhead pressure of 3,431 psi.

MPCL holds a 55% share in the Waziristan Block, with Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) owning 35% and Orient Petroleum 10%.

These back-to-back discoveries are being hailed by energy analysts as vital steps toward achieving national energy security. The finds are expected to reduce Pakistan’s reliance on costly energy imports and contribute positively to the country’s balance of payments.

Experts believe that untapped areas such as the Sujawal and Waziristan Blocks hold strong potential for future exploration, which could boost local production and strengthen Pakistan’s energy independence.

Mari Energies has stated its commitment to accelerating exploration and development efforts, particularly in underexplored regions, to meet the country's growing energy demands.
