LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board is exploring plans to build a new cricket stadium in Jeddah as part of its strategy to expand the reach of the Pakistan Super League beyond Pakistan. The proposed venue could potentially host PSL matches in the future, marking a significant step in taking Pakistani cricket to new international markets.
According to initial reports, the PCB has secured preliminary approval from its governing board to move forward with the project. However, detailed negotiations and a final agreement are still pending, indicating that the plan is currently in its early stages. The idea was reportedly discussed during a recent board meeting held in Lahore.
The project is part of a broader vision to promote cricket in Saudi Arabia, where interest in the sport has been steadily growing. The PCB has expressed its intention to collaborate with the Saudi Arabia Cricket Federation to develop the stadium and strengthen cricket infrastructure in the Kingdom.
If approved, the new stadium in Jeddah could serve as an additional venue for PSL matches, similar to how the tournament has previously been hosted in the United Arab Emirates. Expanding into Saudi Arabia would provide the league with a larger audience base and new commercial opportunities, while also supporting the global growth of cricket.
PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi had earlier visited Saudi Arabia in December 2024, where he met Prince Saud bin Mishal Al-Saud. During the visit, discussions were held on building a modern cricket stadium and exploring ways to promote the sport across the Kingdom.
Saudi Arabia’s cricket structure has seen notable development since the establishment of the Saudi Arabia Cricket Federation in 2020. The initiative has helped organize domestic competitions and attract international attention toward cricket in the region.
While the proposal is still under consideration, the potential construction of a cricket stadium in Jeddah reflects the PCB’s ambition to internationalize the PSL and strengthen cricket ties between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. Further updates are expected once formal approvals and partnerships are finalized.
