Peshawar school roof collapse kills 35 children: Owner arrested
PESHAWAR: Police have arrested the owner of a private school in Peshawar’s Dir Colony following a deadly roof collapse that claimed at least 35 lives, including children and female teachers, while several injured victims remain in critical condition.

The tragic incident occurred when the roof of the school building suddenly collapsed, triggering an emergency rescue operation. The Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Peshawar confirmed the arrest of the school owner, revealing that the institution had been operating under the name of an educational trust.

According to the CCPO, the school building was poorly constructed, which contributed to the deadly incident. Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collapse and determine responsibility for the tragedy.

Rescue operations have faced significant challenges due to the weakened condition of the remaining structure and the narrow streets surrounding the school. Rescue service officials said heavy machinery was not being used because the building remained structurally unstable, raising concerns about further collapse.

The limited access to the site has also made it difficult for rescue teams to bring heavy equipment close to the damaged building. Despite these obstacles, rescue personnel have continued their efforts to respond to the emergency and assist those affected.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives in the incident, particularly the deaths of innocent children and teachers. He extended condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for patience and strength for those mourning their loved ones.

The prime minister also prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured and directed the relevant authorities to ensure that they receive the best possible medical treatment.

Furthermore, Shehbaz Sharif instructed officials to accelerate rescue and relief operations to ensure an effective response to the tragedy.

Meanwhile, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi expressed grief over the deaths and sought a detailed report on the incident. He directed the authorities concerned to investigate the cause of the roof collapse and establish the circumstances that led to the disaster.

Describing the deaths of innocent children as an extremely painful tragedy, the governor extended his heartfelt condolences to the affected families.

The incident has raised serious concerns about building safety, construction standards and the monitoring of private educational institutions. The investigation is expected to establish whether negligence or violations of safety regulations contributed to the collapse.
