ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday directed that pending tax-related cases be effectively pursued to ensure the recovery of the nation's wealth, emphasizing the government's commitment to broadening the tax base and increasing tax revenue.
Chairing a review meeting on tax reforms, the Prime Minister stressed the need for strict action against individuals and sectors involved in tax evasion. He also instructed that government officers and personnel who facilitate tax evasion must be held accountable.
"Expanding the tax net is the government’s top priority. We aim to reduce the tax rate to ease the burden on the common man," PM Shehbaz said, as quoted by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
The meeting also highlighted the success of the Track and Trace system, which was implemented in cement plants across the country. This system has already contributed to a significant increase in tax revenue, bringing in billions of rupees. The system’s implementation in the sugar industry has also shown promising results, with a 35% increase in tax revenue from November 2024 to April 2025.
PM Shehbaz expressed confidence that the country's economy was stabilizing and moving towards growth. “Everyone must fulfill their responsibility for the country’s development,” he urged.
The Prime Minister's call for action on tax evasion comes as part of broader efforts to address fiscal challenges and improve the efficiency of tax collection systems. With increasing revenue from key sectors like cement and sugar, the government aims to meet its fiscal targets and reduce reliance on external borrowing.
The PM's initiative is also seen as a step toward addressing concerns regarding under-invoicing and tax avoidance by certain industries, with the goal of ensuring a fair and transparent tax system that benefits the entire nation.
