KARACHI: The Royal Thai Consulate-General in Karachi hosted “Thai Night,” a special evening celebrating the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Kingdom of Thailand and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan at Marriott Hotel, Karachi.
The evening was attended by DG Irfan Soomro, Director General of Protocol, Foreign Affairs’ Liaison Office in Karachi; Consuls General, Deputy High Commissioners and members of the Diplomatic Corps; Honorary Consuls; the President of the Arts Council Karachi; representatives of the Pak-Thai Friendship Association and Business Forum; Thai Airways; media and influencers; and celebrity chefs of Karachi.
Guests were welcomed with a retrospective on seventy-five years of friendship between the two nations, followed by a series of cultural performances celebrating both countries – including a Punjabi dance performed by young artists from the Arts Council, and a traditional Thai dance presentation. A live Thai Khim instrumental performance played throughout the evening, lending the celebration a distinctly Thai atmosphere as guests dined.
At the heart of the evening's cuisine were two acclaimed Thai chefs, especially flown in from Bangkok for the occasion: Chef Bo, Mrs. Duangporn Songvisava, recognised as Asia's Best Female Chef and a familiar face from Netflix's Chef's Table, and Chef Dylan Jones, her partner at the Michelin-starred restaurant Bo.lan. Together, the two chefs – long known for their work preserving and reviving traditional Thai recipes – curated a special menu that beautifully blended Pakistani and Thai cuisine, bringing the flavors of both nations together on a single table.
Reflecting on the spirit behind the celebrations, H.E. Mr. Surashete Boontinand, Consul General of Thailand in Karachi, recalled a simple moment from the 1951 State Visit of the late King Bhumibol to Karachi, when His Majesty ate a chapati offered by a textile factory worker at an afternoon tea, which he ate with a smile – a gesture so warmly received that Pakistani newspapers the following day ran the headline, "Thai King relished Chapati."
“That moment has stayed with me,” said Mr. Surashete. “It is why, to this day, I still enjoy pairing Thai green curry with Pakistani chapati, and Pakistani mangoes with Thai sticky rice. These simple combinations capture, in their own way, the warmth and harmony between our two nations – and it is that same spirit we brought to the table tonight.”
The celebrations continued the following day with a Thai cooking masterclass led by Chef Bo and Chef Dylan, attended by a number of Pakistani chefs from culinary schools, hotels, and Thai restaurants across the city. The day also featured a Thai street food buffet blending the flavors of both nations, held at the hotel.
The 75th anniversary of Thailand–Pakistan diplomatic relations marks a longstanding partnership built on cultural exchange, trade, and mutual goodwill between the two countries – a friendship that, much like the evening's menu, continues to bring the best of both nations together.
