KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Friday granted bail to Sahir Hassan, the son of a renowned actor, in a high-profile drug recovery case.

Hassan was arrested on February 22, 2025, in Karachi’s Defence Housing Authority area. Authorities claimed to have recovered 557 grams of cannabis from his possession. Since then, he had been in judicial custody for over two months.

A constitutional bench of the SHC heard the bail plea on Friday. The hearing was attended by Acting Prosecutor General Muntaẓir Mehdi and other legal representatives.

During the proceedings, Sahir Hassan’s counsel confirmed that the accused had been on remand since his arrest and emphasized the non-commercial quantity of the recovered narcotics.

The case was initially heard by a larger bench but was later referred to the constitutional bench due to jurisdictional considerations.

After reviewing the case, the court granted bail to Sahir Hassan and ordered him to submit surety bonds worth Rs1 million.

Following the hearing, Acting Prosecutor General Muntaẓir Mehdi told reporters that the court also directed the Chief Secretary to expedite the establishment of special courts for narcotics-related offenses. He noted that although legislation for such courts has already been passed, practical implementation would take time.

In the interim, the Sindh High Court has recommended that existing courts be given expanded jurisdiction to handle drug-related cases until specialized forums are established.

The case has drawn public and media attention due to the high-profile background of the accused and the ongoing debate over judicial reforms and narcotics legislation in Pakistan.
