KARACHI: The Sindh Education Department has clarified that its decision to abolish the Saturday holiday applies only to government schools, while private educational institutions are free to determine their own weekly schedules.
The clarification comes after confusion over an earlier notification that suggested the revised academic calendar would apply to both public and private schools across the province.
According to the School Education Department, government schools resumed academic activities after the summer vacation on August 1, 2026, with classes now being held six days a week. The revised schedule was introduced to improve academic continuity and ensure timely completion of the curriculum during the current academic year.
Sindh Education Minister Syed Sardar Ali Shah addressed the issue through his official social media account, explaining that the notification requiring six working days specifically applies to government schools. He clarified that private educational institutions are not bound by the government's weekly timetable.
The minister stated that private schools have the authority to decide their own working days, class timings, and holiday schedules based on their institutional policies and administrative requirements. This announcement provides relief to many private school administrations, parents, and students who were uncertain whether Saturday classes would become mandatory.
The clarification has ended speculation surrounding the new policy and confirms that only government schools in Sindh will operate six days a week. Education officials have advised all institutions to follow the relevant guidelines applicable to their respective sectors.
Parents and students are encouraged to contact their schools directly to confirm class schedules, as private institutions may continue observing Saturday holidays or adopt their own academic calendars based on operational needs.
