KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has directed all civic bodies and departments to stay on high alert as monsoon rains continue to lash Karachi. Expressing grief over rain-related fatalities, he underscored the urgent need for strict monitoring of drains and stormwater channels to minimize the risk of urban flooding.
The CM instructed that all required machinery and personnel remain on standby for immediate water disposal. He also directed the Karachi mayor to ensure equipment is fully functional and staff remain mobilised for rapid response. Citizens were advised to avoid unnecessary travel during the downpour.
Murad emphasized coordination among district administration, police, and municipal agencies, while traffic police were ordered to maintain presence in low-lying and congested areas to guide commuters. Residents were also urged to stay clear of electricity poles and weak structures.
Rainfall that began overnight intensified by morning, inundating major roads and neighbourhoods. Areas affected included Shahrah-e-Faisal, Tariq Road, Clifton, Defence, Korangi, Landhi, Malir, SITE Area, North Nazimabad, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Surjani Town, and Taiser Town. Thunderstorms were also reported in North Nazimabad and nearby localities.
