A viral video circulating on X and Instagram falsely claiming to show the funeral procession of Iran’s former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has been identified as AI-generated, according to multiple verification methods and AI detection tools.

The clip began spreading on July 2, 2026, through several pro-Iran social media accounts. One widely shared post described the footage as “the funeral of Imam Shaheed Khamenei,” while another claimed it showed the funeral of Iran’s supreme leader following his assassination during negotiations involving the United States and Israel. Together, the posts attracted hundreds of thousands of views, rapidly amplifying the false claim.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who led Iran for more than three decades, was assassinated in a US-Israel strike on February 28, 2026. His death sparked a 108-day conflict that left thousands dead in Iran and claimed the lives of 13 American troops. Iran responded with missile attacks targeting Israel and several countries hosting US military bases.

Official funeral ceremonies for Khamenei are scheduled to take place from July 4 to July 9, 2026, with events beginning in Tehran before continuing through Qom, Iraq’s holy cities, and concluding with his burial at the Imam Reza shrine in Mashhad.

A detailed review of the viral video uncovered several signs of artificial intelligence manipulation. Analysts observed unnatural crowd movements that resembled flowing water instead of realistic human motion. They also noted that red flags suddenly appeared in the crowd without any visible source or transition—an artifact commonly associated with AI-generated videos.

The final frames of the clip further undermine its authenticity. Rather than depicting an ongoing funeral, the video ends with the message, “Join us for the largest funeral procession in history,” indicating it was promotional content rather than footage from an actual event.

Several AI detection platforms also concluded that the video was artificially created. UncovAI rated it 99% AI-generated, while TruthScan estimated a 71% probability, and AI Aware reported a 68% likelihood that the footage was generated using artificial intelligence.

Additionally, searches of credible Iranian and international news outlets found no authentic reports or footage matching the viral clip.

Fact-check verdict: The claim that the viral video shows Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s funeral is false. The footage is AI-generated and does not depict the official funeral ceremonies.
