ISLAMABAD: Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir held a “positive and productive” meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian during his visit to Tehran, with discussions focusing on the ongoing Iran-US conflict, rising tensions in the Middle East and efforts to restore regional peace.
Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said the meeting made important progress and concluded on a highly positive note. In a social media post, he said the discussions also covered steps required by the parties for the restoration of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
According to Naqvi, the Iranian president openly shared his government’s position and concerns during the meeting. He described the talks as a significant development and expressed hope that the momentum generated by the discussions would contribute to further progress across the region.
The visit by Field Marshal Asim Munir, who is also Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces, came as Pakistan continued diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions surrounding the Iran-US conflict.
During his day-long visit, Asim Munir held meetings with several senior Iranian officials, including President Pezeshkian, Representative of the Supreme Leader on the Supreme National Security Council Mohsen Rezaei, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi and Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni.
The discussions reportedly focused on preventing further escalation, reopening the Strait of Hormuz and finding ways to bring the conflict to an expedited end.
Both sides also exchanged views on regional peace and explored possibilities for a negotiated settlement to outstanding disputes.
Iranian leadership appreciated Pakistan’s constructive diplomatic role and its efforts to facilitate dialogue, de-escalation and a peaceful resolution of the conflict.
The Pakistani delegation’s visit is being viewed as part of Islamabad’s broader diplomatic engagement aimed at promoting stability in the region. Pakistan has repeatedly emphasised dialogue and negotiated solutions to regional disputes.
Naqvi said he hoped the positive momentum from the meeting would continue and help pave the way for lasting peace.
The talks come amid heightened concerns over instability in the Middle East, making diplomatic engagement between Pakistan and Iran particularly significant. Islamabad’s efforts could potentially help create space for further dialogue and contribute to broader regional de-escalation.
