MOROCCO: The death toll from last week's mass migrant crossing into Spain’s Ceuta enclave has climbed to at least 72, according to local authorities, making it one of the deadliest migration incidents in recent years.
Thousands of migrants, most of whom swam around the border from Morocco into the Spanish territory, attempted the dangerous journey in search of a better future.
Government delegate Miguel Angel Perez Triano confirmed the updated casualty figure on Sunday, while officials estimated that nearly 60,000 migrants crossed into Ceuta during the unprecedented influx. Most have since voluntarily returned to Morocco, while Spanish authorities continue to monitor the situation.
Spanish police, military personnel, and Civil Guard officers remain deployed across Ceuta to maintain security and assist with border management. Rescue teams have continued searching the waters near the Mediterranean border barrier, where additional floating security measures have been installed to prevent further unauthorized crossings.
Spain has accused criminal networks of spreading false rumors on social media, claiming that recent immigration rulings would make it easier for migrants to enter the country. Officials believe the misinformation contributed to the sudden surge of people attempting to cross the border.
The migrant crisis has sparked political tensions across Europe, with several European Union member states calling for an urgent coordinated response to address irregular migration. Italy has also temporarily suspended part of its Schengen arrangements with Spain in response to the situation.
Authorities continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatalities while humanitarian organizations urge stronger cooperation between Spain, Morocco, and the European Union to improve border safety, combat human trafficking, and prevent further loss of life during dangerous migration attempts.
