Iran claims capture of second US underwater drone

Iran has claimed that its forces captured a second US unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) in the Strait of Hormuz, according to Iranian state media.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy said the autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) was carrying out what it described as “espionage” activities in the strategically important waterway.

In a statement published by the IRGC’s official news outlet Sepah News, the navy said the drone was seized during a “coordinated and complex operation” involving intelligence capabilities and electronic warfare.

Iran identified the captured underwater drone as a REMUS 600 and said it had been transferred to Iranian specialists for data recovery and further examination.

The latest claim comes amid heightened tensions in and around the Strait of Hormuz, a major global energy shipping route. The waterway connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and is closely monitored by regional and international military forces.

Iran has previously reported the capture of US unmanned underwater systems in the region. However, details surrounding the latest incident, including the circumstances of the alleged seizure, have not been independently verified.

Meanwhile, Iran and Russia have held a new round of consultations on bilateral cooperation in international information security, according to Iran’s IRNA news agency.

The talks took place in Moscow and focused on implementing an existing bilateral agreement on international information security.

Representatives from relevant agencies of both countries reviewed the progress of cooperation and discussed an established action plan under the agreement.

The Iranian delegation was led by the Director General for International Peace and Security at the Iranian Foreign Ministry, while the Russian delegation was headed by the Foreign Ministry’s Information Security Department.

The two developments come as Tehran continues to strengthen security and strategic cooperation with Russia while tensions remain high in the wider region.
