TEHRAN: Tensions between Iran and the United States continue to escalate as Tehran accuses Washington of undermining diplomatic efforts despite ongoing ceasefire arrangements. The statement came from Esmaeil Baqaei, who said the US actions contradict its claims of pursuing negotiations.
Speaking during a weekly press briefing, Baqaei stated that recent developments, including a reported US attack on an Iranian cargo vessel and continued naval restrictions on Iranian ports, demonstrate a lack of commitment to diplomacy. He also pointed to delays in ceasefire implementation in regional conflict zones as further evidence of what Tehran describes as violations.
The conflict, which involves Israel alongside the United States, has intensified since late February, raising concerns about broader regional instability. However, claims regarding the death of Ali Khamenei remain unverified by credible international sources, and caution is advised when assessing such reports.
Despite heightened tensions, both sides had previously engaged in a round of negotiations aimed at de-escalation. The talks, however, failed to produce a breakthrough agreement. These discussions took place under a fragile two-week ceasefire that began earlier this month.
Donald Trump recently announced plans to send a delegation for further talks in Pakistan, though Iran has not confirmed its participation. Baqaei emphasized that, as of now, Tehran has no plans for a new round of negotiations and no final decision has been made.
Key issues remain unresolved, including Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile and control over the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global energy supplies. Iran has firmly rejected any suggestion of transferring its enriched uranium to the United States, calling the idea unacceptable.
Analysts note that mutual distrust continues to hinder progress, with both sides maintaining firm positions on strategic and security concerns. The future of diplomacy now depends on whether confidence-building measures can be restored before the ceasefire fully collapses.
