ISLAMABAD: Ishaq Dar chaired a high-level meeting on Tuesday to review the implementation of fuel conservation and additional austerity measures introduced by the government to reduce expenditures and manage economic challenges.

According to an official statement, the meeting of the Cabinet Committee for Monitoring and Implementation of Fuel Conservation and Additional Austerity Measures assessed the progress made by federal and provincial departments in following government directives aimed at cutting unnecessary spending and conserving energy resources.

During the meeting, Ishaq Dar expressed satisfaction over the overall compliance with the austerity policies and emphasized that all sectors must continue observing strict conservation measures until the country’s economic conditions improve. He stressed the importance of maintaining financial discipline amid ongoing fiscal pressures and rising energy costs.

The deputy prime minister stated that only exceptional cases requiring exemptions from austerity measures should be presented before the committee. He clarified that exemptions would only be considered for critical and time-sensitive government operations necessary for public service delivery and national administration.

Officials briefed the committee on the implementation status of various fuel-saving initiatives and expenditure reduction policies introduced across ministries and departments. The government has been focusing on limiting unnecessary official travel, reducing electricity consumption in public offices, and controlling operational expenses as part of broader economic reforms.

Cabinet Committee for Monitoring and Implementation of Fuel Conservation and Additional Austerity Measures also reviewed a digital dashboard presented by the Federal Minister for Information Technology. The dashboard was developed to monitor and track the enforcement of austerity measures across government institutions and ensure transparency in implementation.

The meeting was attended by senior government officials, including the federal ministers for Information Technology and Climate Change, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Tariq Bajwa, and secretaries from key ministries such as the Cabinet Division, Petroleum Division, Planning Division, and National Security Division. Chief secretaries from all provinces also participated in the session.

Economic analysts believe Pakistan’s continued focus on austerity and fuel conservation reflects the government’s efforts to stabilize the economy, reduce fiscal pressure, and improve energy efficiency. Rising global oil prices and economic uncertainty have increased the need for strict financial management and resource conservation policies across public sector institutions.
