ISLAMABAD: Electricity tariffs for K-Electric consumers in Karachi are expected to decrease by Rs4.69 per unit, offering much-needed financial relief to residents of the city. The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) is set to hold a hearing on June 19 to consider K-Electric’s petition for a tariff reduction under the monthly fuel adjustment mechanism.
If approved, this reduction would result in savings of approximately Rs7.17 billion for consumers in Karachi. Earlier this month, on June 5, NEPRA had already reduced K-Electric’s tariff by Rs2.99 per unit for the March fuel adjustment period. This adjustment will be reflected in June electricity bills, providing some respite amid rising power costs and ongoing load-shedding challenges in the city.
Karachi has been experiencing intensified, unannounced power outages during the peak summer heat, leading to widespread protests from both residents and political representatives. The electricity shortages have further strained the city’s infrastructure and daily life.
In response to concerns about high electricity costs, K-Electric’s CEO acknowledged the issue but placed the responsibility on government policies, indicating that the company’s pricing is influenced by regulatory and policy frameworks beyond its control.
The anticipated tariff reduction is welcomed as a step toward easing the financial burden on Karachi’s consumers and improving access to affordable electricity during the critical summer months.
