KARACHI: The Karachi Tax Bar Association (KTBA) has requested the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to extend the due date for filing annual income tax returns for Tax Year 2025 until October 31, citing persistent technical glitches in the IRIS system and the ongoing flood crisis.

In a letter addressed to the tax authorities, KTBA said that despite repeated reminders, serious issues in the IRIS portal remain unresolved, making timely compliance nearly impossible. The association pointed out that as deadlines approach, the system becomes unresponsive, virtually paralyzing the filing process and causing immense frustration for both taxpayers and consultants.

It further highlighted frequent changes in return forms and technical errors that disrupt the filing process, with some taxpayers reporting the loss of saved drafts after updates. KTBA stressed that these problems not only waste time and resources but also undermine compliance efforts.

The body also drew attention to the widespread devastation caused by recent floods, particularly to businesses linked with agriculture. Expecting taxpayers to meet deadlines in such circumstances, it said, was inequitable.

Invoking sections 214A and 119 of the Income Tax Ordinance, KTBA urged FBR to take a pragmatic decision in the larger interest of tax compliance.
