NEPRA announces cut in k-electric tariff

KARACHI: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has announced a reduction of Rs2.99 per unit in K-Electric’s (KE) power tariff under the monthly fuel cost adjustment for March. The revised rates will be applied in electricity bills for June, offering some financial relief to Karachi’s electricity consumers amid rising power costs and persistent outages.

The decision comes as Karachi continues to face worsening load-shedding during peak summer temperatures. The power crisis has triggered widespread public frustration, with protests erupting across various parts of the city. Lawmakers have also voiced concern over prolonged power interruptions.

Amid growing pressure, K-Electric’s Chief Executive Officer acknowledged the high cost of electricity in a recent interview, but clarified that the pricing structure is determined by national regulatory and policy frameworks. He stated that KE submits its tariff requests to NEPRA, which finalizes and notifies the approved rates. “We charge consumers based on the government’s directives,” he noted.

The CEO also highlighted that K-Electric now holds a non-exclusive distribution license, paving the way for other power companies to enter Karachi’s electricity market. Regarding generation sources, he explained that KE produces electricity using furnace oil and regasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG). He emphasized that if granted authority, KE would prefer charging consumers based strictly on the actual cost of generation, rather than fixed pricing mechanisms.

The latest reduction in tariff may offer temporary relief, but challenges remain as Karachi continues to navigate its complex energy landscape.
