Karachi: The Oil & Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) announced a major discovery of gas and condensate in Khairpur district, Sindh, marking another step toward strengthening Pakistan’s indigenous energy supply.
In a notice to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Thursday, OGDCL confirmed that the discovery was made at the Faakir-1 exploratory well, located under the Bitrisim Exploration Licence. The well is operated by OGDCL with a 95% working interest, in partnership with Government Holdings (Private) Limited (GHPL), which holds the remaining 5%.
The Faakir-1 well was spudded on December 31, 2024, and drilled to a depth of 4,185 meters using OGDCL’s in-house expertise in collaboration with GHPL. The company conducted two Drill Stem Tests (DSTs) in the Lower Goru Formation, targeting both the massive sand and basal sand intervals.
According to the company, the cumulative production test results showed an output of 6.4 million standard cubic feet of gas per day (MMSCFD) and 55 barrels per day (BPD) of condensate through a 32/64” choke. The wellhead pressures recorded were 450 psi for DST-1 and 850 psi for DST-2.
OGDCL hailed the find as a “significant breakthrough,” enhancing the commercial viability of the Bitrisim licence and expanding the company’s hydrocarbon reserve base. “This discovery is expected to play a vital role in narrowing the country’s energy demand-supply gap by leveraging domestic resources,” the company said.
The announcement comes at a critical time when Pakistan is facing mounting energy challenges. The discovery strengthens hopes for improved self-reliance in the energy sector and may reduce the burden of fuel imports.
This development not only reinforces OGDCL’s role as a key player in Pakistan’s energy landscape but also highlights the untapped potential of Sindh’s subsurface reserves.
Further exploration and development activities in the area are expected to follow in the coming months.
