ISLAMABAD: The government has reiterated that the upcoming federal budget for 2026 will be pro-growth and centered on boosting exports, as Minister of State for Finance Bilal Azhar Kayani addressed a key session at the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI). During the meeting with business leaders, exporters, and media representatives, the minister emphasized that the government is pursuing an inclusive and consultative approach to economic policymaking ahead of the budget expected in June.

Kayani stated that under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, authorities are actively engaging stakeholders across Pakistan. He noted that feedback from exporters, traders, and industrialists is being incorporated to ensure a comprehensive “whole-of-economy” strategy. The government is also planning consultations with major business bodies, including FPCCI and OICCI, as well as small traders and associations.

Highlighting recent progress, the minister pointed to macroeconomic stabilization achieved since February 2024. Improvements in inflation control, tax collection, and external account stability have strengthened economic confidence. He added that successful reviews under the IMF programme have helped boost foreign exchange reserves.

Kayani acknowledged that Pakistan has long struggled with boom-and-bust economic cycles driven by import-led growth. He stressed that the government is now shifting focus toward export-led growth, productivity enhancement, and industrial competitiveness to ensure sustainable development.

The minister also mentioned initiatives such as Exporters’ Recognition Awards, aimed at encouraging export performance and supporting long-term economic reforms. Additionally, nine working groups have been formed by the prime minister to develop targeted policy recommendations and address structural challenges in key sectors.

On energy pricing, he explained that petroleum prices are adjusted according to global oil trends, with relief passed on to consumers when possible. The government also provides subsidies to protect vulnerable segments of society.

He concluded by highlighting Pakistan’s role in promoting regional stability, noting that economic planning also considers the impact of regional developments.
