KARACHI: Pakistan has received its first-ever RoRo shipment of electric vehicles Pakistan, with more than 2,000 EVs arriving at Karachi Port in a landmark development for the country’s maritime and logistics sectors.

Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry announced that a 220-metre Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) vessel successfully berthed at the Karachi Gateway Terminal Multipurpose Limited (KGTML), operating under the Karachi Port Trust (KPT). He described the arrival as a major milestone that reflects Pakistan’s growing capacity to handle advanced cargo operations.

According to the minister, the shipment follows his approval last month to facilitate RoRo imports of electric vehicles during a high-level committee meeting on maritime affairs. The successful docking of the vessel demonstrates the country's commitment to upgrading port infrastructure and improving trade efficiency.

The arrival of Pakistan’s first RoRo shipment also marks an important step toward integrating the country into the global clean mobility and sustainable transport supply chain. Officials believe the move will encourage greater adoption of electric vehicles while enhancing Pakistan’s position in international logistics and maritime trade.

Explaining the importance of the RoRo system, Chaudhry said these specialized vessels are designed to transport wheeled cargo such as cars, trucks and buses. Unlike conventional cargo ships, vehicles can be driven directly on and off the vessel, eliminating the need for cranes and reducing loading and unloading time.

He added that the RoRo system improves operational efficiency, enhances cargo safety and minimizes handling costs, making it one of the most effective methods for transporting vehicles worldwide.

The minister further said the successful berthing of M.V. Grande Shanghai highlights the Pakistan maritime sector’s ongoing modernization efforts and its ability to manage specialized cargo in accordance with international standards.

Reaffirming the government's commitment to strengthening the maritime industry, Chaudhry said Pakistan will continue investing in modern port facilities and technology-driven logistics to improve connectivity with global shipping networks and support future trade growth.

The latest shipment is expected to boost confidence among international shipping companies and reinforce Karachi Port’s role as a key regional gateway for vehicle imports and maritime commerce.
