ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday approved the development of a comprehensive, world-class digital ecosystem for the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to strengthen tax administration, enhance transparency, and improve economic decision-making.
Chairing a high-level review meeting on ongoing FBR reforms, the Prime Minister directed authorities to move beyond simple digitisation and build an integrated system connecting the entire economic value chain — from raw material production and import to manufacturing and final consumer purchases.
“The system should enable real-time monitoring across the value chain and provide robust direct digital oversight of all transactions,” PM Sharif said. He also urged officials to engage internationally reputed experts for effective implementation.
The Prime Minister emphasized that centralized data generated through the new system should be used for strategic economic decision-making. He highlighted that broadening the tax base and formalizing the economy are crucial to reducing the tax burden on ordinary citizens.
Officials briefed the meeting on progress towards linking FBR’s data into a unified platform capable of real-time oversight of economic activities.
The meeting included Federal Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Planning and Development Minister Ahsan Iqbal, Minister of State for Finance Bilal Azhar Kayani, FBR Chairman Rashid Langrial, senior economic experts, and other high-ranking officials.
This initiative marks a significant step in modernizing Pakistan’s tax infrastructure and enhancing governance for sustainable economic growth.
