PARIS: Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League triumph was overshadowed by violence, mass arrests, and a fatal road accident as celebrations across France turned chaotic following the club’s latest European success.
According to French authorities, a total of 780 people were arrested nationwide during the celebrations that followed PSG’s victory over Arsenal. Thousands of football fans flooded the streets of Paris and other cities to celebrate the historic achievement, but parts of the festivities quickly descended into disorder as clashes erupted between groups of supporters and law enforcement officers.
The French government had deployed approximately 22,000 police officers and security personnel across the country in anticipation of large public gatherings. Authorities had also prepared for potential unrest following previous incidents linked to major football celebrations.
French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said that several groups engaged in violent behavior during the night, including the use of fireworks directed at police officers. He confirmed that 57 members of the security forces were injured while carrying out crowd-control operations. In addition, 219 individuals suffered injuries during incidents reported across France, with at least eight people sustaining serious injuries.
The celebrations were further marred by tragedy when a young man lost his life in a motocross accident on the Paris ring road. French prosecutors confirmed the fatal incident and said investigations were underway to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the crash.
In a separate incident, a person was seriously wounded in a knife attack in the French capital and remained in critical condition. Emergency services responded quickly, while police launched an investigation into the violent assault.
Officials noted that the number of arrests represented a significant increase compared to previous PSG victory celebrations. According to Laurent Nunez, the 780 arrests marked a 32 percent rise compared to the figures recorded during celebrations linked to PSG’s earlier Champions League success.
Despite the unrest, millions of football supporters around the world celebrated Paris Saint-Germain’s achievement in the UEFA Champions League. However, the incidents have renewed concerns about public safety, crowd management, and violence associated with major sporting events in France.
French authorities have pledged to continue investigations into the clashes, accidents, and criminal activities that occurred during the PSG celebrations, while emphasizing the importance of ensuring public security during future large-scale sporting events and football victory parades.
