DHAKA: Counting is officially underway in Bangladesh after tens of millions of citizens cast their ballots in a landmark national election on Thursday.
The atmosphere across the country was described as festive and largely peaceful, a sharp contrast to the boycotts and intimidation that marred earlier elections. Over 900,000 security personnel were deployed to ensure safety as voters lined up at more than 42,000 polling stations.
The main contest features a bipolar struggle between the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by Tarique Rahman, and a coalition headed by the Islamist Jamaat-e-Islami and the National Citizen Party.
Interim head Muhammad Yunus hailed the day as a celebration of liberation, marking an end to the political nightmare of the previous regime.
