CHINA: China has announced it will accelerate construction on Pakistan’s Mohmand Dam amid growing regional tensions following India's threats to disrupt Pakistan’s water supply.

A report by a Chinese state-owned media outlet revealed that the China Energy Engineering Corporation, which has been building the Mohmand Hydropower Project since 2019, is now expediting its efforts. The firm has begun concrete filling on the dam structure to hasten completion and reduce Pakistan’s vulnerability to water-related pressures.

This development follows India’s suspension of the World Bank-mediated Indus Waters Treaty after the Pahalgam incident, further escalating water security concerns in Pakistan. India’s move to suspend the long-standing agreement has drawn international attention, with Pakistan warning of severe consequences if its water rights are violated.

The Mohmand Dam, located in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, is a multi-purpose infrastructure project aimed at addressing several of Pakistan’s critical needs. Once completed, it will generate 800 megawatts of hydroelectric power, provide 300 million gallons of clean drinking water per day to Peshawar, and support irrigation and flood control measures for the region.

Chinese media emphasized the strategic importance of the dam not only for energy and water sustainability but also as a symbol of enduring China-Pakistan cooperation. The announcement underscores China’s commitment to supporting Pakistan in times of economic and geopolitical pressure.

In addition to the Mohmand Dam, both countries are making progress on other major infrastructure initiatives, including the Diamer-Bhasha Dam, often referred to by locals as the “Three Gorges Project of Pakistan.” These efforts are part of a broader collaboration that includes joint ventures in agriculture, industry, and improving public welfare.

China's decision to fast-track dam construction reflects growing urgency to protect Pakistan’s water resources and energy security, while reinforcing bilateral ties amid increasing friction in South Asia.
