OKARA: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz launched the provincial government’s flood rehabilitation program in Okara on Monday by distributing ‘Flood Cards’ to affected families.

Speaking at a ceremony in Depalpur, she said, “Nawaz Sharif’s daughter has come to fulfil her promise,” assuring victims that relief is not charity but their rightful due. She emphasized that the devastating floods were among the worst in Punjab’s history, and pledged that the government will not rest until every affected individual is rehabilitated.

Maryam Nawaz reiterated her commitment to transparency, stating, “The people’s money will be spent on the people alone.” She added that there would be “zero tolerance for corruption” throughout the process.

Highlighting the scale of the relief effort, the chief minister revealed that 70% of the damage assessment survey has been completed, with compensation already underway. Each flood-affected family will receive Rs50,000 upfront through cheques and ATM cards, with the remainder accessible via banking services.

More than 71,000 bank accounts have been opened for flood victims across Punjab. To address concerns over missing names in relief lists, the government has established 72 complaint camps.

“There will be no discrimination — not by city or by person,” Maryam Nawaz declared. “Under my leadership, no one will be allowed to exploit the people of Punjab.”

The chief minister’s visit and hands-on involvement in the flood-hit areas marks the formal beginning of what she described as a “comprehensive and inclusive rehabilitation program” aimed at rebuilding lives and restoring communities across the province.

This initiative comes amid reports estimating flood damages across Pakistan at over Rs822 billion.
