Pakistan’s top-order batter Fakhar Zaman has been fined 10 percent of his match fee after being found guilty of breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during the tri-nation series final against Sri Lanka on November 29. The International Cricket Council confirmed the development in an official press release, stating that Zaman violated Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which deals with showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during an international match.
The incident occurred in the 19th over of Pakistan’s innings when Fakhar Zaman was adjudged out and reacted by engaging in a prolonged discussion with the on-field umpires. According to match officials, his conduct went beyond the acceptable limits of questioning a decision and fell under dissent, prompting the charge.
This breach resulted in one demerit point being added to Zaman’s disciplinary record. It is his first demerit point in a 24-month period, meaning he faces no immediate suspension. However, players accumulating four or more demerit points within two years may face suspension from international matches, making this warning significant for the experienced batter.
The sanction was proposed by match referee Reon King of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees. Fakhar Zaman accepted the charge and agreed to the penalty, eliminating the need for a formal hearing. Match officials Ahsan Raza, Asif Yaqoob, Rashid Riaz and Faisal Afridi collectively reported the offence following the incident.
According to ICC regulations, Level 1 offences carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand and a maximum penalty of 50 percent of a player’s match fee, along with one or two demerit points. Zaman’s 10 percent match-fee deduction therefore falls on the lighter end of the penalty scale, but the demerit point serves as a reminder to players to uphold discipline on the field.
Fakhar Zaman has been a key player for Pakistan in recent tournaments, and while his competitive nature is often praised, this incident underscores the ICC’s firm stance on maintaining respect for umpiring decisions.
