KARACHI: Authorities across Pakistan have issued flood alerts as a persistent monsoon system brings moderate to heavy rainfall to multiple regions, raising the risk of flash floods, rising river levels, and urban inundation.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and Provincial Disaster Management Authorities (PDMAs) have urged citizens to remain vigilant, especially in vulnerable areas including Punjab, Balochistan, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Alerts remain effective until July 17.

Key Highlights:

  • Rainfall & Flash Floods: Moderate to heavy rains are expected across Punjab, Balochistan, Islamabad, and parts of Sindh. Flash floods are likely in hill torrent zones and river tributaries in Swat, Panjkora, and Balochistan’s local streams.

  • Urban Areas at Risk: Major cities like Lahore and Karachi may experience urban flooding. Dewatering equipment and emergency services are on high alert.

  • River Flows Rising: The Indus, Chenab, Kabul, and Jhelum rivers may see increased flows. Kalabagh and Chashma barrages are at medium flood levels, while Tarbela and Guddu remain at low flood thresholds.

  • Dam Levels: Tarbela Dam is at 74% capacity, and Mangla Dam is at 44%, indicating a risk of overflow with continuous rainfall.

  • Emergency Preparedness: Residents in flood-prone areas are advised to secure valuables on higher ground, pre-identify evacuation routes, and prepare 3–5 day emergency kits with food, water, and essential medicines.

NDMA has recommended the public stay updated through TV, radio, SMS alerts, and the Pak NDMA Disaster Alert app. District administrations are advised to ensure all flood response mechanisms are in place.

This monsoon system, fueled by Arabian Sea moisture, is expected to persist through July 17, with potential intensification across key regions.
