PORTUGAL: Formula One is set to return to Portugal’s Portimao circuit in 2027 and 2028 following the removal of the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort from the calendar. The announcement was made in an official statement by Formula One on Tuesday, confirming a two-year deal with the Algarve International Circuit, located in southern Portugal.
The 4.6-kilometer Portimao track previously hosted the Portuguese Grand Prix in 2020 and 2021. Both events were organized under unique circumstances due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which led to several calendar adjustments and stand-in venues across Europe. The 2020 race at Portimao was notable for seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton securing his 92nd career victory, surpassing Michael Schumacher’s previous record. Hamilton also claimed victory at the circuit again in 2021, cementing its status in modern Formula One history.
Formula One CEO Stefano Domenicali highlighted the growing global interest in hosting Grands Prix, expressing gratitude to the Portuguese government and local authorities for facilitating the deal. “The interest and demand to host a Formula One Grand Prix is the highest that it has ever been,” Domenicali said, noting that Portugal’s inclusion on the calendar underscores the sport’s commitment to expanding its global reach.
Portuguese Economy Minister Manuel Castro Almeida emphasized the regional and economic benefits of the deal, stating that hosting the Grand Prix in the Algarve would strengthen regional development, enhance the value of local territories, and create opportunities for the local economy. While the financial terms of the arrangement were not disclosed, the move is expected to generate significant tourism and commercial activity in the Algarve region.
Portugal has a long history with Formula One, hosting its first Grand Prix in Porto in 1958. Subsequent races were held at Monsanto and the Estoril circuit near Lisbon. Estoril was the site of Brazilian legend Ayrton Senna’s first Grand Prix pole and win in 1985, marking a historic moment in the sport.
The decision to return to Portimao follows last year’s announcement that Zandvoort, the home race of four-time world champion Max Verstappen, will be removed from the calendar after 2026. Formula One currently features a record 24 races per season, and Domenicali has indicated that some European rounds will alternate to allow new venues to join the championship. Belgium’s Spa-Francorchamps circuit is also set to be dropped in 2028 and 2030 as part of a contract extension through 2031 announced last January.
The return of Formula One to Portimao promises thrilling racing action and highlights Portugal’s growing prominence in the world of motorsport, offering fans another iconic European venue to experience top-tier racing.
