ISLAMABAD: A heatwave has gripped Pakistan, with temperatures soaring to as high as 45°C in six districts on Saturday, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).

The maximum temperature of 45°C was recorded in the Sindh districts of Dadu, Jacobabad, Sukkur, Larkana, as well as in Lasbela and Sibi in Balochistan. Other regions of the country also saw high temperatures, with Rahim Yar Khan reaching 43°C, Bahawalpur 42°C, and Okara and Sahiwal recording 41°C. In the central regions, districts like Multan, Faisalabad, and Lahore recorded 40°C. Karachi, known for its coastal climate, experienced hot and humid weather with the temperature soaring to 38°C.

The PMD has issued a heatwave alert, warning of soaring temperatures across the country from April 26 to April 30 due to a high-pressure system in the upper atmosphere. The system is expected to affect most parts of the country by April 27, leading to a significant rise in daytime temperatures.

From April 26 to May 1, temperatures in southern regions such as Sindh, southern Punjab, and Balochistan are expected to remain 5-7°C above normal. The upper half of the country, including central and upper Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan, will experience temperatures 4-6°C above normal between April 27 and April 30.

Authorities have urged citizens to take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses during this intense heatwave. People are advised to stay hydrated, wear light clothing, and avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during peak daytime hours. Special attention is being given to vulnerable groups, including the elderly and children, who are more susceptible to heat-related health issues.

The PMD also forecasts that the heatwave may continue until the beginning of May, and citizens should stay updated on weather conditions through official channels.
