Heavy rain and hailstorms lash Karachi - WATCH

KARACHI: Heavy rainfall accompanied by hailstorms, thunder, lightning, and strong winds swept across several areas of Karachi on Tuesday, causing a noticeable drop in temperature.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) had earlier forecast light to moderate rain with thunderstorms in the city.

According to the Met Office, rain was recorded in Maripur, Mochko, Gulistan-e-Johar, Federal B Area, Malir, Liaquatabad, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, and along University Road. Hailstorms were also reported near the airport, Malir Cantt, Gulistan-e-Johar, and Karimabad.

The highest rainfall of 20mm was measured at Jinnah International Airport’s Jinnah Terminal. Other recorded amounts included 8.5mm in Nazimabad, 5.8mm on University Road, 2.3mm in North Karachi, 2mm in Bahria Town, and 1mm each in Old Airport and Surjani Town.

Strong winds ranging between 10 and 40 kilometres per hour accompanied the weather system, blowing from varying directions across the city.

Humidity levels were recorded at 91 percent in the morning, while visibility dropped to 600 metres. Over the next 24 hours, humidity is expected to fluctuate between 45 and 95 percent.

The minimum temperature in Karachi on Tuesday was 18.6°C. On Wednesday, temperatures are likely to range between 17°C and 19°C. The maximum temperature recorded on Monday was 27.7°C, with Tuesday’s high expected to fall between 26°C and 28°C.
