ICJ urges Israel to ease aid flow into Gaza

The Hague: The International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled Wednesday that Israel must facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid into Gaza and ensure Palestinians’ access to basic necessities. The court stated Israel, as an occupying power, has both a duty to provide essential supplies and an obligation “not to impede” their delivery.

The ruling, though advisory and non-binding, carries what the ICJ called “great legal weight and moral authority.” UN Secretary-General António Guterres welcomed the decision, expressing hope that Israel would comply. ICJ President Yuji Iwasawa said Israel must allow UN agencies, including UNRWA, to operate unhindered in Gaza. The court found that Israel had not substantiated claims accusing UNRWA staff of involvement in the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack.

Israel rejected the opinion, calling it a politically motivated move disguised as international law. Foreign Ministry spokesman Oren Marmorstein said Israel would not cooperate with UNRWA but would continue to work with other UN bodies.

Meanwhile, humanitarian groups have been increasing operations under a fragile ceasefire. The World Food Programme reported sending 530 trucks carrying 6,700 tonnes of food into Gaza—enough for 500,000 people for two weeks—but said deliveries remain below target.

Following the ruling, Norway announced plans to propose a UN General Assembly resolution urging Israel to lift aid restrictions.
