Iran says Strait of Hormuz control could boost economy

TEHRAN: Iran’s military said control over the Strait of Hormuz could significantly increase the country’s economic revenues and strengthen Tehran’s geopolitical influence amid rising tensions in the Middle East. The statement comes as Iran continues to tighten oversight of the strategic waterway following the outbreak of conflict involving the United States and Israel on February 28.

The Strait of Hormuz is considered one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes, handling nearly 20 percent of global oil and liquefied natural gas exports during peacetime. Iran’s increased control over the waterway has sparked concerns in global energy markets and raised fears of disruptions to international oil supply chains.

According to Iran’s ISNA news agency, military spokesman Mohammad Akraminia said Tehran’s authority over the Strait of Hormuz could potentially double the country’s oil income through strategic economic measures and maritime revenues.

Akraminia stated that the western side of the strait is currently overseen by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) naval forces, while the eastern section is under the control of the Iranian navy. He added that Iran’s strategic management of the waterway strengthens the country’s international leverage.

The development comes amid ongoing tensions between Iran and the United States despite a fragile ceasefire that has remained in place since April 8. Reports indicate that Iran has largely restricted shipping activity through the Strait of Hormuz since the conflict escalated earlier this year.

Iranian officials say the country plans to use the strait as a “lever of power” in regional and international negotiations. Ebrahim Azizi, chairman of Iran’s parliamentary national security commission, confirmed that lawmakers had finalized a strategic plan regarding management of the waterway.

Last month, Iranian deputy parliament speaker Hamidreza Hajibabaei claimed Iran had already started earning revenues through tolls imposed on vessels crossing the Strait of Hormuz.

Global analysts warn that any prolonged disruption in the Strait of Hormuz could affect oil prices, energy exports, shipping routes, and international trade, making the region a major focus for global powers and financial markets.
