TEHRAN: The naval forces of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said on Wednesday that they seized two ships attempting to cross the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, escalating tensions in the region amid an ongoing naval blockade imposed by the United States.

According to an official statement, the IRGC navy identified and stopped the vessels for allegedly violating maritime regulations set by Iran. The ships were subsequently directed toward Iranian territorial waters. Authorities did not immediately confirm whether the vessels were boarded during the operation.

The two ships were identified as MSC Francesca and Epaminondas. Iranian officials claimed that one vessel was linked to Israel, while the other was accused of tampering with navigation systems and posing a threat to maritime security in the region. These allegations could not be independently verified.

The development comes at a time when Iranian ports remain under a naval blockade enforced by the United States since April 13, shortly after a ceasefire temporarily halted hostilities involving Iran. The blockade has significantly restricted maritime traffic, allowing only limited vessel movement through the Gulf.

Iranian authorities have reiterated that all ships must seek permission before entering or exiting the Gulf via the Strait of Hormuz, warning that any violation of these regulations will result in strict action. The IRGC also cautioned against activities that could disrupt safe passage through the critical waterway.

The Strait of Hormuz is considered one of the world’s most important النفط corridors, handling nearly one-fifth of global oil and gas exports during peacetime. Any disruption in this region has the potential to impact global energy markets and international trade.

Since the escalation of conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the United States earlier this year, maritime operations in the region have remained tense. Analysts say continued restrictions and incidents such as ship seizures could further strain global shipping routes and increase geopolitical uncertainty.

The situation remains under close watch by the international community as developments in the Gulf region continue to unfold.
