Iranian Parliament Passes Bill to Halt Cooperation with UN Nuclear Watchdog

DUBAI: Iran’s parliament approved a bill on Wednesday to suspend cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog, Nournews reported. The move still requires final approval from the country’s Supreme National Security Council.

The legislation, endorsed earlier this week by the parliament’s national security committee, would halt the installation of surveillance cameras, inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and submission of nuclear activity reports. Committee spokesperson Ebrahim Rezaei stated the measures would remain in place until the security of Iran’s nuclear facilities is assured.

This legislative development follows recent U.S. airstrikes targeting Iran’s nuclear infrastructure. While former President Donald Trump claimed the strikes had “obliterated” Iran’s nuclear capabilities, a preliminary U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) assessment reportedly contradicts that claim. According to sources cited by Reuters and The Washington Post, the attacks sealed access points but did not destroy underground facilities or Iran’s enriched uranium stockpiles. Some centrifuges also reportedly remain intact.

Iran maintains that its nuclear programme is intended solely for peaceful energy purposes. However, the recent escalation has reignited international concerns about Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

Despite criticism of the report, the Trump administration informed the UN Security Council that the strikes had “degraded” Iran’s nuclear programme, a more measured statement than Trump's initial claims.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the attack, asserting it had neutralized the threat of nuclear annihilation and reaffirmed Israel’s commitment to prevent any resurgence of Iran’s nuclear weapons development.
