GAZA CITY: Israeli airstrikes killed at least 58 Palestinians overnight in the Gaza Strip, marking the latest phase in a deadly escalation that has seen more than 300 Gazans killed since Thursday, according to local health authorities. This attack is among the deadliest since a truce between Israel and Gaza collapsed in March.

Marwan Al-Sultan, director of the Indonesian Hospital in northern Gaza, described the situation as “catastrophic,” saying, “Since midnight, we have received 58 martyrs, and many victims remain trapped under the rubble.” Hospitals in the region are overwhelmed with casualties as the airstrikes intensify.

Israel's military confirmed that it is conducting extensive airstrikes and mobilizing ground forces in preparation for a possible expansion of its operations within Gaza, aiming to achieve "operational control" in parts of the enclave. This marks the beginning of “Operation Gideon’s Wagons,” Israel’s effort to defeat Hamas and recover hostages taken during the October 2023 attacks. An Israeli defense official had previously stated that the operation would not commence until after U.S. President Donald Trump concluded his Middle East visit.

The ongoing violence coincides with growing international concerns over a humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The United Nations has warned that Gaza is on the brink of famine, following a 76-day blockade that has halted critical aid deliveries. UN aid chief Tom Fletcher appealed to the UN Security Council to take action to “prevent genocide” in Gaza.

Trump, during his visit, acknowledged the worsening hunger crisis and called for aid deliveries, urging Israel to reconsider its stance on aid access. Despite the mounting pressure, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to continue the offensive against Hamas, with plans for a more extensive military campaign, which could involve seizing full control of Gaza.

As the death toll rises, the international community continues to demand a ceasefire and the resumption of peace talks.
