JAPAN: A popular Japanese sushi chain has made global headlines after paying a record-breaking 510 million yen, approximately $3.24 million, for a single bluefin tuna at the traditional New Year fish auction held at Tokyo’s Toyosu fish market. The purchase marks the highest price ever paid for a tuna at the annual event, highlighting both Japan’s deep-rooted sushi culture and renewed optimism surrounding the country’s economy.
The prized bluefin tuna, weighing an impressive 243 kilograms, was secured by Kiyomura Corp, the Tokyo-based operator of the well-known Sushi Zanmai restaurant chain. The auction took place on Monday as part of the first tuna auction of 2026, a highly anticipated event that attracts restaurateurs, traders, and media attention from around the world.
Kiyomura Corp president Kiyoshi Kimura, often referred to as Japan’s “Tuna King,” expressed surprise at the final bid amount. Speaking to reporters after the auction, he said he had expected the winning price to range between 300 million and 400 million yen, but the bidding quickly escalated beyond expectations, eventually crossing the 500 million yen mark.
Kimura said the record-breaking bid was meant to lift public spirits and reflect confidence in Japan’s future. Referring to the newly formed government led by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, Japan’s first female prime minister, he expressed hope that economic conditions would improve in the coming year. He added that Sushi Zanmai would continue working hard alongside the country’s leadership to contribute positively to the economy.
The new record surpassed Kiyomura’s own previous high bid of 333.6 million yen, which he paid for a tuna at the 2019 New Year auction. While the prices at these auctions often exceed market value, they are widely seen as symbolic gestures, representing good fortune, prosperity, and strong business confidence for the year ahead.
Following the auction, the giant tuna was transported to Sushi Zanmai’s flagship restaurant in Tokyo. From there, it will be carefully prepared and distributed across the chain’s outlets nationwide. Despite the enormous purchase price, Kimura confirmed that customers will be able to enjoy the premium tuna dishes at standard menu prices, allowing the public to share in the excitement of the historic catch.
The annual New Year tuna auction is a long-standing tradition in Japan and serves as a barometer of industry sentiment. This year’s record-setting sale has drawn international attention and sparked widespread discussion on social media, reinforcing the cultural and economic significance of the event.
