KARACHI: Heavy rain in Karachi has caused a major power and gas crisis, severely disrupting daily life across the city. Widespread electricity outages and gas supply interruptions have been reported as infrastructure systems struggle to cope with the rainfall.
According to officials, more than 700 feeders of K-Electric have tripped due to rain-related faults, leaving large parts of the city without electricity for extended hours.
Areas including Sultanabad, Landhi, Korangi, Saudabad, and Shah Faisal Colony are among the worst affected by power outages. Other localities such as Orangi Town, Manghopir, SITE Area, Gadap, and Kathore are also facing prolonged electricity disruptions. Residents in New Karachi, Surjani Town, Garden, Malir, and Gulshan-e-Iqbal continue to report outages, while Scheme 33 and FB Area are also impacted.

Sui Southern Gas Company has reported system pressure issues due to reduced availability, resulting in low gas pressure and outages in residential and industrial areas. Households, restaurants, and businesses are facing difficulties as cooking and commercial operations are affected.
Rainfall data released by the Pakistan Meteorological Department shows that Nazimabad recorded the highest rainfall at 69.9mm. Significant rainfall was also recorded in Keamari, Gulistan-e-Johar, Saadi Town, and Bahria Town, contributing to urban flooding and infrastructure strain.
Experts say Karachi’s aging power and gas infrastructure is highly vulnerable to extreme weather conditions, leading to repeated service breakdowns during monsoon spells. citizens have expressed frustration over the recurring outages and lack of immediate restoration.
Authorities have assured that emergency teams are working to restore electricity and gas supply, but warned that intermittent disruptions may continue if rainfall persists. Citizens have been advised to take safety precautions, especially around exposed electrical wires and flooded areas.
The ongoing Karachi rain has once again exposed critical gaps in urban infrastructure, raising concerns over the city’s preparedness for extreme weather events.
