KARACHI: Karachi ranked as the most polluted city in the world on Tuesday, recording an unhealthy Air Quality Index (AQI) level of 179. Despite clear skies, the city’s air pollution remains a significant health concern.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) reported a maximum temperature of 32°C and a minimum of 20.4°C, with light northern winds blowing at a humidity level of 34%. Experts warn that prolonged exposure to such high pollution levels can cause respiratory issues, urging residents—especially children and the elderly—to limit outdoor activities and wear masks.
An AQI between 151-200 is categorized as unhealthy, while levels from 201 to 300 are considered very harmful, and anything above 300 is deemed hazardous. Air pollution levels tend to rise in winter due to changes in wind speed, direction, and lower temperatures, which cause heavier air to trap pollutants closer to the surface.
Polluted particles, including carbon and smoke, accumulate in the atmosphere, creating a toxic layer over the city. Experts emphasize the need for stricter pollution control measures to protect public health.
