KARACHI: Karachi’s public transport network is poised for a major upgrade next week as the Sindh government prepares to roll out new double-decker buses and electric buses across the city. The decision was announced during a review meeting chaired by Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, where transport officials briefed him on progress across ongoing projects.
Memon said both the double-decker fleet and the new EV buses are expected to arrive within a week, promising long-awaited relief for commuters who rely on overcrowded and inconsistent transport services. He also revealed that an EV taxi service is set to launch by December, offering an additional and potentially more affordable travel option for Karachi residents.
The Sindh government plans to add 500 more buses to the People’s Bus Service during the current financial year, greatly broadening route coverage. New routes will also be launched in other districts, improving connectivity for underserved areas. Memon directed authorities to complete all operational preparations without delay to ensure Karachi’s transport reforms stay on schedule.
In a move aimed at supporting women’s mobility, the government will establish scooter-riding training centres at divisional headquarters. These centres will support the upcoming Pink Scooty Scheme, designed to help women—especially students—travel more independently.
Officials updated the minister on the Yellow Line and Red Line BRT corridors, with Memon noting that work on the Yellow Line is ongoing around the clock. He instructed teams to accelerate construction, complete depots and swiftly remove utility obstacles. The second section of the Taj Haider Flyover is also set to open soon, restoring two-way traffic.
