KARACHI: Karachi Traffic Police have set speed limits on all main roads of the city, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Pir Muhammad Shah announced on Saturday. Motorcycles and light transport vehicles (LTVs) are now restricted to 60 km/h, while heavy transport vehicles (HTVs) have a speed limit of 30 km/h.

To enforce these limits, speed-monitoring systems equipped with cameras are being installed across the city. Additionally, 10,000 heavy vehicles will be fitted with trackers linked to the Traffic Regulation and Citation System (TRACS) for real-time monitoring.

Currently, TRACS is operational across 40% of Karachi, connected to 1,717 cameras, with full functionality in District South. Major roads, including Sharae Faisal, are already under surveillance, and e-challans are being issued in Malir, Korangi, East Keamari, and District Central for overspeeding, signal violations, helmet non-compliance, and other traffic infractions.

Shah stated that industrial zones such as SITE, Landhi, New Karachi, and Korangi will soon be integrated into TRACS with additional cameras and speed monitoring. By 2026, the system will include 11,000 more cameras, achieving full city-wide coverage.

To complement enforcement, a month-long traffic awareness campaign will begin on November 8, educating citizens on traffic rules and the TRACS system.

Acknowledging early-stage limitations, Shah said, “Within the next two to three months, TRACS will reduce accidents and traffic congestion. The e-challan system is impartial — violators, regardless of social status, will be fined.”
