KARACHI: The federal government and the Sindh government have officially announced public holidays on June 25 and 26, 2026, corresponding to the 9th and 10th of Muharram-ul-Haram, in observance of Ashura across Pakistan.
According to a notification issued by the Cabinet Division on Monday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif approved the declaration of public holidays on Thursday and Friday, June 25 and 26, to mark the solemn religious occasion of Ashura, one of the most significant events in the Islamic calendar.
The notification stated that the 9th and 10th of Muharram 1448 AH would be observed as public holidays throughout the country, allowing citizens to participate in religious processions, majalis, and commemorative events held to honor the sacrifices of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions at Karbala.
Separately, the Sindh government also issued an official notification declaring June 25 and 26 as public holidays across the province. The announcement applies to all provincial government offices, autonomous and semi-autonomous bodies, corporations, and local councils operating under the administrative control of the Sindh government.
However, institutions providing essential services, including hospitals, emergency services, law enforcement agencies, and utility providers, will remain operational during the holidays to ensure uninterrupted public services.
The announcement comes as authorities intensify preparations for Muharram processions and gatherings throughout the country, particularly in Sindh, where security and civic management arrangements are being finalized ahead of Ashura.
Last week, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah chaired a high-level meeting to review security measures and facilitation plans for Muharram. During the meeting, he directed all relevant departments to ensure foolproof security for processions and majalis while maintaining uninterrupted civic services for mourners.
The chief minister emphasized that maintaining law and order during Muharram remains the provincial government's highest priority. He warned officials that any negligence or lapse in security or administrative arrangements would not be tolerated.
Murad Ali Shah instructed law enforcement agencies, local administrations, and district authorities to remain on high alert and strengthen coordination to ensure peaceful observance of Muharram across Sindh. He also directed officials to incorporate recommendations from religious scholars and community leaders into the final security and facilitation plans.
To support religious gatherings, the chief minister ordered utility providers, including K-Electric, HESCO, and SEPCO, to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply and avoid load-shedding along procession routes and majalis venues.
He further stressed the importance of religious harmony, interfaith respect, and unity among different schools of thought, urging all stakeholders to work together to maintain peace and stability during the holy month.
With Muharram approaching, security has already been tightened in several cities, including Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, and other districts. Authorities have vowed to utilize all available resources to protect lives and property while facilitating millions of mourners participating in Ashura events nationwide.
