Midnight summons of students sparks anger in Karachi

KARACHI: The Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) has issued notices to students in connection with an ongoing inquiry into alleged result tampering at the Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK).

According to sources, the notices were sent through educational institutions, but parents expressed outrage after students — including female candidates — were directed to appear at ACE’s West office around 12:30 am. Families questioned the logic of calling students at midnight, with one parent asking, “How can we send our daughters to such offices at that hour?”

The investigation, launched nearly 18 months ago, centers on allegations of manipulation in the 2022 intermediate results. Despite its length, the inquiry has failed to establish charges against senior board officials. Earlier, cases were registered against two former chairmen and two controllers of examination, but no conclusive evidence was presented.

This marks the first time students themselves are being summoned directly. Many of those called have since cleared competitive exams like MDCAT and NED admissions, and are now enrolled in higher education programs.

In January 2025, an inquiry committee was formed by the interim chairman of BIEK, Syed Sharaf Ali Shah, shortly after he assumed office. The committee, in coordination with the Universities and Boards Department, was tasked with reviewing complaints regarding controversial results and ensuring transparency.

The board assured that students’ concerns would be addressed impartially, stressing that their future remains the highest priority. Parents and students were encouraged to formally submit grievances for resolution.
