LAHORE: Tremors of a moderate earthquake were felt in Multan and several districts of Punjab on Tuesday, according to a statement from the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA).

The quake registered a magnitude of 4.8 on the Richter scale. PDMA’s spokesman reported that the epicenter was located about 126 kilometers west of Multan, at a depth of 55 kilometers beneath the earth’s surface.

Provincial authorities have begun reviewing possible damage to structures, while the provincial control room and district emergency centers remain on high alert, the PDMA director general added.

Earlier this month, tremors were also recorded in Islamabad, Punjab, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The National Seismic Monitoring Centre confirmed those shocks originated from Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region, with a depth of 111 kilometers.

The seismic waves at that time were felt in Peshawar, Abbottabad, Malakand, Mardan, Hangu, Nowshera, Battagram, Swat, Bajaur, Mohmand, Buner, Attock, Mianwali, and Gujranwala. Experts have cautioned that Pakistan remains vulnerable to recurrent activity due to its location on the boundary of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates.

Recently, eastern Afghanistan was struck by a devastating 6.0-magnitude quake that killed hundreds. Pakistan provided relief aid, including food, medicines, and daily-use supplies, to assist the affected Afghan communities.
